A Season of Giving at the Mill Creek Y

MILL CREEK, WA – December 4, 2025. Each year, the Mill Creek Family YMCA invites members to support local children through the Giving Tree program, ensuring families in our before and after-school programs and throughout the community feel included and supported during the holiday season.

This year, South County Fire deepened that impact. After asking how they could help, firefighters shopped for 20 of the 50 children on Mill Creek’s list. Even better, they delivered those gifts to the Mill Creek Y this week, bringing holiday spirit straight to our doors.

Precor has also stepped forward through a generous gift card drive, allowing us to provide every family with an additional gift.

Later this month, the Mill Creek Y will be hosting the children and their families for a night of giving. There will be catering from Tapped Mill Creek, festive crafts and games, a visit from Santa, and more. While kids enjoy activities, parents will load up the gifts to take home so their children can open them on Christmas morning.

Thanks to our members, partners, and volunteers, the Giving Tree continues to shine. If you are interested in participating or learning about ways to give, email Erin Flansburg at [email protected].

YMCA “HOOPS” 3×3 Basketball Program Grows with Strong Turnout

EVERETT, WA – November 25, 2025. The YMCA of Snohomish County is pleased to celebrate another successful season of HOOPS, the Y’s popular 3×3 basketball program for teens. After three seasons, HOOPS has continued to grow by expanding to both the Everett Y and Mill Creek Y this year.

Designed for teens in grades 8 to 12, HOOPS gives young athletes a fun and affordable way to stay active and connect with peers on Friday nights. For just $25 per season, participants can register as individuals or as a team of 3 to 5 players.

“We had an incredible turnout this season,” said Sam Toft, Teen Program Director at the Everett Family YMCA. “It’s exciting to see so many teens coming out every Friday night, filling the gym with energy and friendly competition. It’s what makes this program so special.”

This fall’s session wrapped up in mid-November, but the excitement doesn’t end there. HOOPS sessions take place periodically throughout the year, giving players new chances to join in and sharpen their skills.

The Harlem Globetrotters Surprise Y Kids with a Visit

EVERETT, WA – November 18, 2025. A YMCA of Snohomish County Before and After School Care site was treated to a surprise visit from the Harlem Globetrotters.

The kids were dazzled by talented tricks from Lucious “Too Tall” Winston. Known for his skillful dribbling and long-range shooting, Winston put on a show these Y kids will never forget.

The Globetrotters are gearing up for their worldwide 100-Year Tour, which is set to pass through Everett on January 25, 2026 at Angel of the Winds Arena. The team is known for being the originators of basketball style, so it’s a natural fit to celebrate their centennial anniversary with the Y, where basketball was invented.

“Our kids’ faces just lit up,” said Michelle Pitzer, Everett Family YMCA Senior Director of Child Care. “Lucious took time to connect with each child, showing them that teamwork, kindness, and fun all go hand in hand. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do.”

The visit brought joy and energy to the Y, leaving kids inspired and excited to carry the Globetrotters’ message of positivity and teamwork both on and off the court.

Belonging, Strength, and a Fresh Start: Jenny’s YMCA Journey

After experiencing a personal loss in 2020, Jenny’s world around her seemed to collapse. The grief, isolation, and financial strain of the pandemic made everyday life feel insurmountable. As a stay-at-home mom, she carried the weight of caring for her children while financially and emotionally struggling.

Two years later, her sister intervened. “You’re going to the YMCA,” she insisted, refusing to leave until Jenny drove to the Marysville Family YMCA to apply for a scholarship to join the Y. Nervous and embarrassed, Jenny expected judgment to apply for a scholarship. Instead, she met a welcoming staff member who made the process simple and painless.

Her kids were eager to explore Kids Zone, and their excitement drew her back the next morning. What began as hesitant steps into the Y soon became daily visits. While her children played, Jenny started to heal. “I would walk to the weight room and see Group Fight happening, thinking, ‘I wish I was the kind of person that took that class. One day, I’m going to try to go in there.’”

That decision changed everything. When the new year came, she was motivated to have a goal to work towards.

Class by class, Jenny moved from the back row to the front. Her instructor praised her progress, telling her that she was getting stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally. “An object in motion stays in motion,” she says. “I just kept progressing.” With each workout, she found friendship, confidence, and hope.

Eventually, Jenny joined the Y staff as a full-time employee. The place that once helped her rebuild her life had become her career and her calling. Between the Kids Zone staff reminding her that she’s a good mom to her group exercise instructor cheering her on. She said everyone boosted her confidence, making her want to keep coming back.

After welcoming her third child in 2024, Jenny leaned again on the Y community. With encouragement from her colleagues, she joined Athlete 30, a 30-minute, twice-weekly workout that fits her new rhythm of life. It reignited her drive and helped her reconnect with her health and confidence.

In June 2025, she decided to take the Body Composition Analysis (BCA), a complementary tool for members that helps track your progress. And over the summer, she lost 20 pounds and 5% body fat, nearly returning to her pre-baby weight.

The BCA helped her stay motivated. She said the ability to make progress brought back the old Jenny where the excitement of having a goal to work towards encouraged her.

It all started with Jenny walking through the Marysville Y doors and joining the Y. “I feel so empowered since I joined the Y,” said Jenny “It’s impacted my personality and my character and what I think I can accomplish.”

Schwab Tires Supports Youth and Promotes Safety with Multiple Donations to the Y

the YMCA of Snohomish County

Everett, WA. November 13, 2025 – Thanks to the Les Schwab Tires for Purpose program, the YMCA of Snohomish County is even better equipped this fall to empower youth to discover their potential, build confidence, and positively engage with their communities.

Through the Les Schwab Tires for Purpose program, five of the YMCA’s vehicles – a full-sized bus, two mini buses, a Suburban and a Ford Ranger XL – were outfitted with brand-new, donated tires this month at four different Les Schwab locations in the area. The vehicles are used to transport staff and members, especially youth, to a wide variety of events year-round. More vehicles on the road for the YMCA means more opportunities for the community.

“The YMCA of Snohomish County is committed to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive, and we are so grateful to Les Schwab for supporting that vision and keeping our community safe with their generous donation,” said Brianne Kreppein, Grant Manager at YMCA of Snohomish County. “Tires for Purpose is an amazing program, covering a basic need that nonprofits often struggle to find funding for.”

Les Schwab Tires for Purpose awards community nonprofits that are making a positive difference with a set of tires for their organization’s vehicle.

“It’s a meaningful way Les Schwab helps local organizations stay on the road to do more good,” said Les Schwab Area Manager Rich Baalman. “Les Schwab has always been about creating opportunity, especially in the small towns where we were founded and where we work. We want to help all kids in our communities dream and prosper.”

According to Kreppein, the donation came at the perfect time for the Y, “Les Schwab made it possible to replace tires on all of our vehicles that needed it across Snohomish and Island County just in time for the rainy fall and winter seasons. We can’t thank them enough for helping our youth get safely to their field trips, swim lessons, and before- and after-school care!”

In 2025, Les Schwab Tires supported more than 300 organizations with the Tires for Purpose program across the 15 states where the company operates. To learn more about the program, visit https://www.lesschwab.com/tiresforpurpose. Applications for 2025 have closed, but nonprofits will have another opportunity to apply in early 2026.

YMCA Flag Football Player Competes in Playmaker Playoffs

We’re proud to celebrate one of our very own flag football players, Eli T.! He’s been selected as one of 16 young athletes nationwide to participate in the “Playmaker Playoffs.” Now in the quarterfinals, Eli is one step closer to being crowned the champion!

Eli, who currently plays for the Mill Creek Y, was chosen after sharing his story and game highlights with the nonprofit, Every Kid Sports. The program honors young athletes who demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and perseverance through sports.

His passion for football began when he watched his older brother play, which led him to start playing at the age of four. Their family found the Y when his sister participated in the Free Girls Flag Football Clinic earlier this year.

“Supporting him and supporting all our children into doing what they love helps shape their future,” his mom said. “We love all the support that we’re getting right now for him in the tournament.”

Community members can support Eli by visiting the website to vote and follow his progress throughout the tournament. Good luck, Eli!

YMCA of Snohomish County Expands Aquatics Leadership with Two Key Hires

Everett, WA – November 10, 2025. The YMCA of Snohomish County is proud to announce two strategic additions to its Aquatics leadership team: Kevin Blum, Director of Competitive Swimming and Rosie Kirianov, Head Age Group Coach. Together, they will enhance the Y’s ability to deliver exceptional aquatics programming and strengthen the bridge between swim lessons and the Y’s competitive swim team across Snohomish County.

Kevin joins the Y with a wealth of experience as a competitive swimming coach in both the United States and Australia, coaching athletes to race at multiple National Championships, Olympic Trials, and Team USA. Kevin was named to the US National Team coaching staff in 2013 to help lead the team at the World University Games. He has also spent a number of years coaching at the NCAA Division 1 level. In his new role, he’ll oversee all aspects of the Y’s competitive swim program, YMCA of Snohomish County Barracudas (YSCB), including supervising the coaching staff, coordinating meets, and developing teams, while building a unified approach across branches.

“I’m excited to help the YMCA of Snohomish County achieve success at every level,” said Kevin. “The Y’s mission-driven approach aligns perfectly with my belief that swimming develops not just athletes, but strong, confident individuals ready to thrive in and out of the pool.”

Rosie brings deep Y roots and a lifelong connection to the sport of swimming. Her career began at the Y, where she started as a lifeguard and swim instructor before advancing into coaching and leadership roles. She will lead the Age Group competitive swim program and support the consistency and quality of swim instruction across all locations. Her work will focus on coaching young athletes and mentoring instructors.

“I love coaching, not just because of my passion for the sport, but because it gives me the opportunity to help shape and support young individuals as they grow,” said Rosie. “I’m thrilled to join the YMCA of Snohomish County and to help create a strong, connected aquatics community.”

The addition of Kevin and Rosie marks an exciting step in strengthening the YMCA of Snohomish County’s aquatics leadership and ensuring sustainability across programs. Their combined  expertise will support growth in competitive swim and lesson participation, while supporting aquatics staff and fostering collaboration among branches.

New Executive Director Joins the Marysville Family YMCA

MARYSVILLE, WA. October 31, 2025. We are excited to welcome Thomas “Tommy” Speidel as the new Executive Director of the Marysville Family YMCA. Tommy’s first day in-branch will be Monday, November 3—we invite you to stop by, say hello, and help us give him a warm Marysville welcome!

Tommy was a “Y kid” growing up in Richmond, Virginia. At his local YMCA, he learned to play basketball and was coached by his father—an experience that helped shape his life.

He graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and originally planned to pursue a career as a college athletic director. However, a post-graduation internship in the athletics department at Boston College inspired him to take a different path—one that led to a purpose-driven career with the YMCA.

Tommy’s YMCA journey began in 2003 as a part-time fitness instructor with the YMCA of Greater Richmond. Over time, he advanced through several leadership roles and, in 2009, accepted an Executive Director position with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. In 2013, he joined the Channel Islands YMCA, where he served for 12 years in multiple capacities, most recently as Regional Executive Director overseeing the Lompoc branch and the association.

Throughout his career, Tommy has demonstrated success in program management, special projects, and financial performance. He is a collaborative, inclusive leader experienced in guiding both volunteer and staff teams. He is also highly regarded for his fundraising expertise, particularly in major gifts, donor relations, and grant writing.

Tommy and his wife, Tricia, have been married for over 16 years. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors—hiking, biking, surfing, and playing music.

YMCA of Snohomish County Launches Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program

Mill Creek, WA — September 22, 2025. This fall, the YMCA of Snohomish County is launching its Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program to help individuals take control of their health. This free program provides personalized support as participants develop the habit of monitoring their blood pressure. During the program, participants will take and record their blood pressure from home at least two times per month, attend two consultations a month with a Healthy Heart Ambassador, and attend a monthly nutrition seminar.

One in three American adults have high blood pressure, a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease. Research shows that consistent monitoring can lower blood pressure and reduce health risks.

“It’s the Y’s commitment to keeping our community healthy and being open to the community, not just members,” said Sara Thompson, Director of Health and Wellness of the Mill Creek Family YMCA.” Being free is part of our social responsibility of not having any barriers to improving your health.”

To qualify, participants must be 18 or older, have a diagnosis of high blood pressure, and meet basic health eligibility. The program is free and open to the community; YMCA membership is not required. All six Snohomish County locations will offer the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program.

“The hope is that participants that join this program meet other people, start coming into the Y, and creating good habits,” Thompson adds. “Ideally, being social, healthy living, and fitness just become a part of their routine.”

The initiative is part of the YMCA’s national suite of evidence-based chronic disease prevention programs, bringing healthier futures to communities nationwide.

You can register at https://ymca.link/blood-pressure. The program begins in October. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Sara Thompson at [email protected].
